Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews has been ruled out of the remainder of the Australian ODI series due to his calf-injury which sustained during the fourth ODI on Wednesday.

Mathews trudged off the field when he was on 28 in the 27th over of the Lankan innings but later returned to bat at the fall of the 8th wicket on one leg to score 12 more runs. Sri Lanka went onto lose the match by 6 wickets as Australia took an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series.

Mathews will return to Colombo tomorrow (1st September) to take a CT scan and most likely to be sidelined for the two-match T20I series as well.

Sri Lanka Cricket is yet to name a replacement for Mathews and in the absence of the regular skipper; Vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal will step into the shoes of captaincy.

“His injury looks very bad and most likely will be ruled out for the rest of the Australian tour.” Chandimal said to the media after the 4th ODI.

Four years ago, a calf injury forced Mathews to miss the finals of the Commonwealth Bank tri-series in Australia and the Asia Cup in Bangladesh.
