Triangular baseball championship is being held annually among the three oldest baseball playing schools in the country Royal College, Richmond College and Kingswood College. Tournament is was held under two categories, Senior under 19 years and Junior under 15 years.
Royal college baseball team won the K.M.C.Fernando challenge shield at the recently concluded triangular baseball championship.
This year the shield was won by the Royalists beating Richmond with a score of 12 to 09. The keenly contested finals was a thriller from the beginning and Royal managed to secure their win only during the final two innings. Taking the youth Baseball standards of Sri Lanka to a whole new level the 1st Xi baseball team of Royal College and Richmond College managed to give the spectators a very interesting match.This match can be called as an eye opener to almost anyone who did not have an idea about this sport.
The Team was captained by Hasitha Gunarathne while Kalana Dias vice Captained the team.
The best Hitter award was awarded to NImantha Dilshan , a player of the Richmond College team.
The best pitcher award was awarded to Shan Tennakoon and the best fielder award was Awarded to Dilen Fernando.These two individuals represented Sri lanka in the Youth Asian Baseball Championship and are members of the U-18 National team.
Royal College is the oldest baseball playing school in the island with a history that goes back to the 1980’s.
The 1st Xi Baseball team of Royal college will take this opportunity to thank the principle Mr.Upali Gunasekara ,The senior Games Masters Mr.Richard perera and Mr.Sudath Liyanagunawardane , the coach of the team Mr. Sisira Kumbukage and the Prefects Council of Royal College for the Years ’15/’16 for helping them to be successful as this was the first tournament that Royal college played and we are happy to announce that Royal college Emerged victorious.
