A late penalty from Science College fly half N. Neranjan helped them make their way in to cup final of the “Milo” under 18 ‘Fifteen a side’ rugby tournament.

St. Joseph’s College kicked off from left to right in the last semi- final of the day (9th September). The Joes started well by making some strong tackles and showing good intent from the start.

Even though Joes started well the boys from Mount Lavinia settled down in to a rhythm of their own and dominated possession and territory but neither team could finish as the half ended nil-all.

Half time: Science nil Joes nil.

The second half was no better as both teams continued to drop the ball in vital attacking areas of the field. Joes managed to gain some ground and as the Science College boys were penalized in the kicking range of Josephian full back Sameesha Viranga, he stepped up and successfully kicked over the penalty to record the first score of the game and giving Joes a slender lead of 3 points. Science College turned the tide as they applied tons of pressure on the Joes defence line and it paid off as Science got a penalty in the kicking range of fly half N. Neranjan and he went on to successfully convert the penalty to level the scores at 3 points apiece.

The game was heading toward an exciting finish but more indiscipline from the boys from Darley road cost them as they conceded yet another penalty in the kicking range of N. Neranjan and he made no mistake as he struck the ball over the black dot to hand Science College a well deserved win in a sloppy semi final. With this win Science College will face St Peters in the Cup final in the “Milo” under 18 ‘Fifteen a side’ rugby tournament.
