Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of India’s upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka after failing to recover in time from a knee injury sustained during the second ODI against England last month.
The 32-year-old, who was rested for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June, had been included in the Sri Lanka squad subject to clearing a fitness assessment at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. However, it is understood that Bumrah, who missed the Lord’s ODI owing to an impact injury sustained while fielding in Cardiff, continued to experience discomfort during his rehabilitation and has now been withdrawn from the squad.

The setback is a major blow for India’s transitioning Test side, which has lost two home Test series over the past two years and has had mixed results outside of it. Bumrah, currently the world’s top-ranked Test bowler, has had his workload carefully managed since suffering a back injury during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
As part of that workload management, he featured in only three of the five Tests in England last year before being rested for the Afghanistan Test immediately after IPL 2026.
