Battle of the Saints

St. Peter’s College were left to regret their decision at the toss on Day 1 of the 92nd Battle of the Saints after St. Joseph’s College piled on 281 for 5 at stumps at the SSC Grounds, capitalising on wayward bowling and defensive field settings for most of the day. After winning the toss and opting to field first, the Peterites failed to apply early pressure despite helpful conditions, allowing the Josephians to settle and gradually take control of the contest.

The Josephian innings began cautiously, with the Peterite new-ball bowlers keeping things tight initially, as no runs came off the first four overs. However, the early discipline did not last long, as inconsistent lines and a lack of attacking fields meant the batsmen were rarely forced into mistakes. Instead of surrounding the bat, St. Peter’s often spread the field, allowing the Josephian top order to rotate the strike comfortably and build partnerships without risk.

Yenula Danthanarayana played the anchor role with a patient 84 off 193 balls, absorbing the pressure before punishing loose deliveries. He was joined by Aveesha Samash, who compiled a steady 53, as the pair ensured the Josephians recovered from the slow start and moved into a strong position by lunch.

The Peterites’ biggest problem throughout the middle session was their inability to create chances. The bowlers maintained decent economy rates, but without sustained pressure, wickets were hard to come by. This allowed Senuja Wekunagoda to play the most fluent knock of the day, scoring 88 off 112 balls with 15 fours, dominating the scoring while the field remained largely defensive.

At one stage, St. Joseph’s looked set to bat the Peterites completely out of the game, reaching 219 for 1, with the bowlers struggling to find breakthroughs. The lack of close-in fielders and missed half-chances further added to the frustration for the Bambalapitiya side, as the Josephians dictated terms for the first two sessions.

To their credit, St. Peter’s fought back late in the day through Shavidu Silva, who produced an excellent spell to bring some life back into the contest. His disciplined line finally forced mistakes, and he finished the day with 4 for 58, helping reduce the Josephians from a commanding position to 281 for 5 by stumps.

Silva removed the well-set Yenula Danthanarayana for 84 after the batter mistimed a full toss, ending one of the most patient knocks of the day. He struck again to trigger a mini-collapse, while the highlight in the field came when Asadisa De Silva produced a superb catch, running back from the infield before diving forward to complete it — a moment that lifted the Peterites after a long period on the back foot.

Captain Rishma Amarasinghe made 22, while Pamoda Dalpadadu remained unbeaten on 20 at stumps alongside Chethina Kavinda, ensuring the Josephians still held the advantage heading into the second day.

Having chosen to field first, the Peterites would have hoped to make early inroads, but a combination of reduced pressure and a lack of attacking intent in the field allowed St. Joseph’s to control most of the day. While the late wickets kept the match alive, the decision at the toss could yet prove costly if the Josephians continue to build on their total tomorrow.
