The 51st edition of the Mercantile Rugby Sevens will be held over three days, from the 15th – 17th of June 2023 at the CR&FC Grounds in Colombo.

Mercantile Sevens, a firm favorite amongst the rugby faithful of the Island, sees the top rugby talent of the country turn out in cooperate livery alongside rugby players of yesteryear, who have now become corporate citizens.

All member firms of the mercantile sector who are registered at Mercantile Rugby for at least a month are eligible to participate in the tournament with the cut-off day for new entrants being the 15th of May 2023. The deadline for team entries will be the 1st of June.

This year the competition is set to return to the usual segments, having adapted a shorter format last year due to the lack of participating teams. The Men’s competition will feature Cup/Plate, Bowl, and Shield segments.

The main criteria that will govern which segment the teams play in is as follows,

  • Cup/ Plate – 4 or more “A” division club players
  • Bowl – Maximum number of “A” division club players allowed will be 3 per team

Shield – 2 “A” division Club players can be registered but only one (1) “A” division club player will be permitted to play at a given time.

The 51st Mercantile Rugby 7s will also feature a Women’s tap rugby competition where the rugby-loving ladies of the cooperate sector will compete. The teams will need to have 7 players per team.

After an extended hiatus, the 50th edition of the Mercantile Rugby Sevens was held in September last year with great interest. John Keells ‘A’ emerged as winners in the Cup segment defeating a strong 3DH outfit in the Cup final while Dialog ‘A’ won the Plate defeating John Keells ‘B’. Sampath Bank won the Bowl defeating Brandix while Fair first got the better of Ceylinco in an insurance tussle to be crowned the Shield champions.

In the Ladies tag final NDB bank defeated Sampath Bank to be crowned as the Women’s champions.
