Reigning champion in the Women’s 400m event Nadeesha Ramanayake and Kalinga Kumarage won major honours on the final day of the 98th National Athletics Championship.

10,000m – Women’s

The final day of the 98th Nationals kicked off with the Women’s 10,000m event with South Asia’s Bronze medalist Nilanthi Lanka in contention. However, it was H.M.N Nandasena who held her ground to win the event with a time of 35:21.11min. K.M Malinda who placed second finished with a time of 36:23.94min. Nilanka Lanka had to settle for a Bronze this time in the Nationals with a time of 36:32.75min and took to the ground immediately with an injury on her ankle.

Hammer Throw – Women’s

It was A.A Lakshika’s year from the get-go as she threw her way into a Gold medal at this year’s Nationals with a throw of 43.02m. S.M Amarasinghe secured a comfortable second place win with a throw of 42.25m while Weranga Thisarani finished third with a distance of 37.42m.

Triple Jump – Men’s

Sanjaya Jayasinghe of Sri Lanka Army secured Gold in the Men’s Triple Jump event with a leap of 16.32m. Shreshan Dananjaya had to settle for yet another Silver with a mark of 16.12m. Junior V. Sandaruwan grabbed third place over South Asian medalist Safran Ahamed with a leap of 15.84m.

1500m

Gayanthika Abeyrathne showed off with a blistering 4:17.58min to win the event comfortably against two other big names. Nilani Rathnyakae and Nimali Liyanarachchi followed her second and third places with timings of 4:21.28min and 4:28.13min respectively.

Saman Kumara Fernando won the Men’s 1500m event with time of 3:47.86min while Hemantha Kumara finished dangerously close behind at 3:49.02min. 

Hammer Throw – Men’s

Sisira Kumara of Sri Lanka Army won the Men’s Hammer Throw with a throw of 50.73m. Sanjaya Bandara finished second with 49.59m and D.M Dharmasena took homr Brinze with a throw of 44.51m.

400m

Two-time reigning champion Nadeesha Ramanayake completed a successful trifecta winning the Nationals this year with a timing of 53.47sec. 800m winner Dilshi Kumarasinghe settled for Silver with a time of 53.81sec. 

200m winner Kalinga Kumara collected his second Gold medal in the 400m this morning with a timing of 46.25sec. Aruna Darshana was ousted of a Silver medal hope with N. Rajakaruna edging him by .02 seconds. Rajakaruna timed 47.02 while Darshana had to settle for Bronze with a timing of 47.04sec.
