The 92nd Ritzbury Sir John Tarbat Senior Athletic Championship 2024 was commenced yesterday, September 30th, at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo, a much-anticipated meet for all the young athletes around the country.
Several new competition records were set on the first day of the meet, along with finals in a few events.
A notable achievement was in the boys’ under-18 200m event, where both J.O.S. Silva from St. Sebastian’s College, Kandana, and S.M.V.S. Rajakaruna from St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa, set new competition records with a time of 21.3 seconds (unofficial timings).
Additionally, in the girls’ under-16 long jump event, Dilini Rajapaksha from Lyceum International School, Wattala, established a new competition record with a jump of 6.12 meters. Dilini, displaying remarkable talent in this event, is already being hailed as a future star in Sri Lankan athletics as her true potential has been realized.
Consequently, in the girls’ under-18 high jump event, V.P.N. Samadhi from Wijitha Vidyalaya, Dickwella, cleared a height of 1.69 meters, winning the event and setting a new competition record as well.

– Under-20 Discus Throw – T.D.S.I. Ratnasiri (Balangoda Ananda Maithriya College)
– Under-18 Long Jump – T. Sandil (St. Peter’s College, Colombo)
– Under-18 3000m – E.K.G.Y.R. Wickramasinghe (Walalla Pathadumbara College)
– Under-20 5000m – S. Thudhiharashidan (Matale Hindu College)
There is bound to be excitement throughout this meet, as on the first day itself, it is clear just how talented these athletes are, and just how important this meet is for them to be one step closer to their dreams.
