Tharusha and Nethra shines with individual awards on Day 3

After a hiatus of a few years, the 51st Junior John Tarbat Athletic Championship ended after 3 successful days at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapakse Stadium on the 30th of December.

St. Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa, bagged the overall boys championship while Ave Maria Convent Negombo won the overall girls championship.

Tharusha Abhishek of Lyceum College Wattala who secured 853 points won the best athlete award for boys and Nethra Samadhi of Vijitha Central College Dikwella with 907 points won the best athlete award for girls.

During the third and final day eight game records were renewed. S.D Hettiarachchi of Dharmaraja College Kandy established his second games record of the championship winning Under 12 boys 100m event with a timing of 12.5 seconds. The boys 70m hurdle event record was also broken by Akeen Gunathilake with a dashing time of 11.4 seconds.

Maris Stella College Negombo renewed the record for the under 15 boys 400×4 relay event clocking 3.38.8 minutes. Nethra Samadhi who won the best athlete award for girls also won the under 15 girls high jump event with a jump of 1.68m.

In the under 13 girls long jump event, E. Shehara renewed the event record with a distance of 5.20m. In the same age category, D.B Bandara of Rangiri Dambulla National School broke the 70m hurdles record with a time of 12.5 seconds.
