51st John Tarbat Junior Athletics Championship

After a hiatus of a few years, one of the most prestigious meets in the schools calendar, Junior John Tarbat Athletics Championship commenced for the 51st time on the 28th of December at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapakse stadium.

The athletes for the championship were selected via the divisional meets that took place in September. On the first day, most of the preliminary round events took place and two new records were established.

The first record was broken by S.D Hettiarachchi of Dharmaraja College Kandy in the Under 12 boys 80m event with a timing of 10.1 seconds.

In the boys under 15 high jump discipline, Tharusha Mendis of Lyceum College Wattala confirmed first place with a performance of 1.93m.

Rajamanokaran Elipiriyana of Palali Central College clinched first place in the under 15 boys javelin throw event with a throw of 50.76m

With a performance of 4.96m, Ashen George of Gateway College Colombo confirmed the first place in the under 12 boys long jump event. In the girls event, Vishca Nimsara of Ediriweera Sarathchandra vidyalaya registered first place with a height of 5.41m.

In the under 14 boys shot put, Rivija de Silva of St. Joseph’s College cemented the top place with a distance of 13.14m.

Under 15 girls long jump victory went to S.U Ratnayaka of Lyceum College Wattala who registered a performance of 5.31m. The boys shot put first place in the same age category went to S. Tennakoon with a distance of 10.45m.

Vishaka College student, A. Abeywickrama won the under 14 girls high jump event with a 1.40m jump while N. Nethumini of Dharmapala College Pannipitiya won the same event of the under 12 girls with a performance of 1.26m.
