The Prison Grounds in Agunakolapalassa were transformed into a cauldron of excitement recently as the 4th edition of the “Battle of the Sea Line” unfolded. This much-anticipated annual “Big Match” limited-overs encounter between arch-rivals Tangalle Boys’ National College and Siddhartha National College, Weligama, lived up to its hype, delivering a heart-stopping finish that saw Siddhartha College hold their nerve for a narrow 7-run victory.
Winning the toss and opting to field first, Tangalle Boys’ National College immediately looked to apply pressure on the Siddhartha batting lineup. Openers Hemsara Wishwanatha and Vihanga Sandeepa adopted a cautious approach, laying a steady foundation. However, with the score at 20 for no loss, Tangalle struck. Saveesh Theekshana delivered a fine delivery to claim the first scalp, breaking the opening stand. The wicket brought Pubudu Lakshan to the crease, and he immediately launched a counter-attack to shift the momentum. Following the dismissal of Sineth, Rashith Sinethka joined Lakshan, and the pair kept the scoreboard ticking. Lakshan’s entertaining cameo, which featured two boundaries and a pair of sixes, ended shortly after he reached 30 runs. However, Rashith Sinethka steadied the ship, guiding his side to a three-figure total before becoming the fifth wicket, dismissed by Sasindu Hashan.
That wicket triggered a collapse for the Weligama lads, who slumped from 101/4 to 113/7 in quick succession. A brief recovery seemed on the cards when Omalsara Amayuru stepped in, but the Tangalle bowling attack had the final say. Left-arm paceman Saveesh Theekshana was brought back into the attack and wreaked havoc, causing the final three wickets to fall for the addition of just a single run. Siddhartha College was eventually bundled out for 134 runs. Sasindu Hashan and Saveesh Theekshana were the pick of the bowlers, sharing the wickets between them to steer the Tangalle effort.

Chasing a modest target of 135, Tangalle Boys’ National School got off to a devastating start, losing opener Tharindu Odithya for a duck. The other opener, Jamith Thisara, understood the gravity of the situation and anchored the innings. He found an able ally in newcomer Nadun Theekshana, and the pair escalated the hopes of the Tangalle fans by establishing a crucial 50-run partnership for the second wicket. Just as the game seemed to be slipping away from Siddhartha, Hemsara Wishwanatha delivered a magnificent delivery to find the stumps of Theekshana. A few overs later, Wishwanatha struck again, removing the set batter Thisara for a well-compiled 28 runs, which included three fours.
Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Tangalle continued to chip away at the target through brief partnerships. At one stage, victory looked imminent as they required just 24 runs with 5 wickets in hand. However, Hemsara Vishwanatha had other plans. He produced a devastating spell that saw Tangalle lose four wickets in quick succession, swinging the pendulum dramatically back in favor of Siddhartha.

Though the lads from Siddhartha National College posted a groundbreaking victory to claim their maiden “Battle of the Sea Line” title, the dramatic nature of the contest, which twisted back and forth between the teams, was the real winner.
