The inaugural edition of the “Space of the Brothers” big match cricket encounter was unveiled at the Danny Abeywickrama Grounds (Hakmana Pradeshiya Sabha) recently. Organized with the noble objective of popularizing the gentleman’s game among schools in the Hakmana area, the encounter lived up to its hype, delivering a nail-biting, low-scoring thriller that saw Methodist Central College, Hakmana, secure a dramatic 17-run victory over Kongala Central College.
Winning the toss and electing to field first, Kongala Central College’s decision initially appeared justified, but the Methodist openers had other plans. The duo of Yenul Wenuja (26) and Manindu Dilmina (24) provided a solid foundation, coming close to a half-century partnership. However, the momentum shifted when a serious misunderstanding while running between the wickets resulted in a run-out, costing Methodist their first wicket.

The setback triggered a collapse as Methodist lost three quick wickets. Set batter Yenul Wenuja and Deneth Nethmina attempted to steady the ship with a brief recovery, adding 31 runs to the tally. Despite their efforts and some resistance from the lower order, the Methodist innings failed to gain significant traction. They were eventually bowled out for 141 runs in 41.4 overs. Yenul top-scored with 26 runs, laced with three boundaries, while Dilmina contributed a handy 24, featuring a six and a boundary. For the Kongala outfit, Adeesha Nirmal was the standout bowler, delivering a stunning spell of 4 wickets for just 19 runs, well supported by Sadew Mihidum, who chipped in with a couple of wickets.
Chasing a modest target of 142, Kongala Central College’s run chase got off to a disastrous start. Off-spinner Manusha Nimsara struck gold in the very first over, removing opener Vonal Viduthika. However, Minuth Paboditha and Wisura Prathibha settled in to stabilize the innings, forging a valuable 32-run stand for the second wicket. Just as the Centralians began to cruise, Manindu Dilmina turned the game on its head. In a devastating 10th over, Dilmina hit the timber twice, reducing Kongala from a comfortable 36/1 to a precarious 43/4.
A brief fightback ensued when Minuth Paboditha and Akash Wishmika put together a 22-run partnership. Following the dismissal of Minuth, Akash Wishmika fired on all cylinders, launching a blistering counterattack on the Methodist bowlers.
Wishmika’s innings was the highlight of the chase as he smashed a fighting 44 runs, including six fours and a massive six, the highest individual score of the match. He single-handedly brought his side to the verge of victory. However, just when the game seemed to be slipping away, Manindu Dilmina struck again, claiming the prized wicket of Akash.
The tension was palpable as the match went down to the wire. With Kongala needing 18 runs and possessing two wickets in hand, the spectators were on the edge of their seats. Unlike their Methodist counterparts, who had managed some lower-order resistance, the Kongala tail-enders crumbled under pressure. The innings was eventually bundled out for 124 runs. Manindu Dilmina
was the architect of the victory in the second innings, claiming four wickets, while Manusha Nimsara provided excellent support with three wickets.
Ultimately, it was a thrilling 17-run victory for Methodist Central College. While the result brought joy to the winning side, the inaugural “Space of the Brothers” encounter succeeded in its primary mission of generating immense enthusiasm among fans from both schools and setting a high standard for future editions of the fixture.
