All-round Romal Fernando stars as De Mazenod take honours

Romal Fernando’s all-round brilliance helped De Mazenod College take major honours against St. Anne’s College while Mahanama College finished day one strongly against Lumbini College in their respective traditional fixtures.

De Mazenod College, Kandana vs St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala

The traditional fixture between De Mazenod Colleand St. Anne’s College ended in a draw today at Kurunegala. After being 87 runs for 9 wickets overnight, St. Anne’s College lost the remaining wicket in the very first over of the day without adding any run to the total. Right arm leg spinner Romal Fernando ripped through Anne’s batting line up by picking up 6 wickets for 30 runs.

De Mazenod College began their second innings 58 runs ahead and posted 138 runs for 8 wickets before declaring the innings. Romal Fernando who showed his bowling skills earlier, top scored with 42 runs. Chasing 197 runs to win, lads from Kurunegala made only 134 runs for 8 wickets at stumps.

Lumbini College, Colombo vs Mahanama College, Colombo

The traditional fixture between Mahanama College and Lumbini College commenced today at Colts Cricket grounds in Colombo. After winning the toss, Lumbini College opted to bat first but they were bundled out for just 137 runs as Pathum Botheju starred with the ball picking up 3 wickets for Mahanama College.

Mahanama College replied strongly with the bat posting 216 runs for 3 wickets when umpires called stumps on day one. Sonal Dinusha (56) and Pawan Rathnayake (52) top scored and remained unbeaten at the crease.

The traditional fixture between St. Sylvester’s College and Kingswood College commenced today at Pallekelle International Cricket grounds. The Sylvester’s College skipper won the toss and chose to bat first but posted only 163 runs in 71.2 overs.  

Devinda Dissanayake picked up 3 wickets for 25 runs for Kingswood College. In reply, Kingswood College made 78 runs for 2 wickets at close of play on day one.
