Four matches in the Singer Schools’ U19 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 concluded today around the Island.

St. Joseph’s College vs Maris Stella

After 21 wickets fell on 1st day at Kadirana, the lads from Darley road faulted once again with the willow as Sachintha Mahindasinghe and skipper Jehan Daniel guided them to a respectable 168 all out inside 52 overs. Maris Stella off-spinner Ravindu Fernando completed a match bag of 9 for 109 as the hosts needed 211 to win the traditional encounter.

Chasing 211 to victory, the match ended in a dramatic fashion as the Josephians dominated the drawn encounter.

After batting the entire day, the Peterites decided to declare on 283/9 in the group ‘C’ encounter which concluded in Katuneriya.

Skipper Nipun Dananjaya gave some hope for the home team as he stroked a brilliant century, but the lads from Bambalapitiya held their nerve to gain first innings points.

Royal College vs Kingswood College

The hosts resumed day two, needing 109 to register first innings points in the division 2 encounter which played at Police grounds, Kandy.

The Royalists managed to restrict Kingswood batting to 189 all out with remarkable bowling efforts from left-arm spinner Manula Perera and Venuja Mendis taking four wickets apiece.

Coming in to the second essay, the boys from Reid avenue declared their innings on 127/7 setting up Kingswood College a tricky target of 152 in the fourth innings. However, the game ended in a thriller as Royal took away the 1st innings points.
