St Thomas's Matara finish the day on a high

St Thomas’ College, Matara came back strongly in the third session to take honors on day 1 in the finals of the Singer U19 Division II league tournament 2016/17 against St. John’s College, Panadura at Surrey grounds. 

The boys from Matara won the toss and elected to field first. St John’s top order rose to the occasion and laid the foundation for a good total. Kavindu Hashan was the top scorer with a well composed 59. Sithum Telge and Rukshan Dissanayaka chipped in with 49 and 42 respectively.

They were at a comfortable position going into the final session, but the Thomians came back strongly with a cluster of wickets to restrict their opponents for just 207 runs. Praveen Madushan was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 64 while Hashim Dilman bagged 3 for 63. 

At stumps on day 1, St Thomas’ College were 33 for no loss in 12 overs. Day 2 will commence tomorrow with St Thomas needing only 174 runs to take the championship.
