The 15-member squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka U19 tour of West Indies, which will be played as a Tri-series between hosts West Indies, Sri Lanka and England from the 6th to the 21st of December in Antigua, will leave Sri Lanka today (06) to the Caribbean.
The Sri Lanka squad was scheduled to depart from Sri Lanka on 28th November, but the departure was postponed due to visa complications. West Indies Cricket board has re-scheduled the fixtures to accommodate the Sri Lankan team’s delayed arrival.
Middle-order batsman Nipun Dananjaya from St. Joseph’s Vaz College will continue to lead the Sri Lankan side in the series which would be Young Lions’ last assessment before the ICC U19 World Cup which will be held in South Africa in January-February.
Star wicket keeper batsman Kamil Mishara, Ahan Wickramasinghe and Ashain Daniel who were suspended from the team due to disciplinary issues, have made a comeback to the team, strengthening the team’s batting fire power. Apart from the trio, top order batsman from St. Anthony’s College Chamindu Wickramasinghe and Josephian all-rounder Lakshan Gamage have also been added to the squad.
In – Kamil Mishara, Ahan Wickramasinghe, Ashain Daniel, Chamindu Wickramasinghe, Lakshan Gamage, Naveen Fernando
Out – Mohamed Shamaaz, Thaveesha Abhishek, Avishka Tharindu, Chihan Kalindu, Sandun Mendis, Rohan Sanjaya, Dilshan Madushanka
Two genuine seamers in Amshi de Silva and Yasiru Rodrigo who could be useful in Caribbean conditions, are part of the squad with the company of fast bowling all-rounders Chamindu Wijesinghe and Lakshan Gamage. Unfortunately, fast bowling sensation Dilshan Madushanka has been injured and his void will be filled by Naveen Fernando from Maris Stella College. The spin bowling department is loaded with 2 left arm spinners (Sonal Dinusha, Dilum Sudeera) 1 wrist spinner (Kavindu Nadeeshan) and 1 off spinner (Ashain Daniel).
Th team will be keen to turn their fortunes in this series as they failed to register any wins in their last tour in Bangladesh where they lost 4-0 in the Youth ODI Series. The U19 team is coached by former Sri Lanka captain Hashan Tillakaratne and the team manager will be former Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof.
