Making up for all they lost in a stunning display, the Sri Lanka Women’s rugby team beat the SingaporeWomen 26 – 10 in the plate semi finals. Sri Lanka had a dissapointing day 1 where they lost all three matches in the pool stage against (Hong Kong, China & Thailand). However, they came back ever so strongly in day two and the team was boosted after the win against Singapore.

As a result SL women had to play the finals once again with Thailand where they already lost 24 – 00 in the group stage. Captain Ayesha Perera lead the team from the front with some smashing tackles and turnovers. Sandika Hemakumari scored the first try for the Lankans after a solid off load by Ayesha Perera. Sri Lanka dominated the first half with possesion and the ace of the team Thanuja Weerakkody picked up the off load of Hemakumari and sprinted for the second try. Weerakkody converts 14 – 00 at half time

The girls cut loose in the second half and Thanuja Weerakkody was yellow carded and as a result it gave plenty of time and chance for the Thai women to equalise the score in quick succession. The score stood at 14 – 14 in the final whistle. Kick off from extra time was well collected by the girls and they spread the ball left to right with quick hands.  Replacement winger Anusha Attanayake had enough steam to beat her opposite number and the sweeper to score the golden try in the dying stage which sealed the victory for SL women. 19 – 14 was the final score.
