Sevens rugby will once again take the country by storm when the inaugural Sri Lanka Super 7s kicks off this weekend bringing in this exciting sporting spirit to the Racecourse Complex.

The Sri Lanka Super 7s Series that will liven up the Racecourse Complex will see the future stars in the rugby field as the schools step out to show their skills alongside the main Sri Lanka Super 7s tournament.

A total of eight School teams will feature in the first ever Sri Lanka Super 7s series that starts this Friday (5th) and will battle it out at Racecourse for the school sevens title. Providing an early entrance to the professional playing stage, the school matches will be played in between the franchise competition.

The school tournament will run with the same format as the franchise competition and the eight teams will be grouped in to two teams. The teams in each group will play each other in the first day in order to determine the group finishing positions. According to the team standings, the quarterfinals will be played the following day.

While the winners of the quarterfinals will advance forward in the draw, the other teams will be matched into the Shield, Bowl and Plate competitions respectively.

The school sevens champions for 2016, S. Thomas’ College will lead group A in the draw together with the league winners Isipathana College. Group B will be dominated by the Peterites together with St. Joseph’s and new entrants to the top division, Zahira College Colombo.

It will be an interesting contest for the schools and the same format will be applied to the second leg while the overall winner will be judged by the total number of points each team has accumulated over the two legs.

The school games will commence on the 5th at 1.20 p.m. while on Saturday the games are expected to start at 12.56 p.m. The cup final for the schools will be played just before the final of the franchises at 8.50 p.m.
