S. Thomas’ survive Jaffna scare

St. John’s College, Jaffna fought back to draw the game against S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia in the traditional encounter which concluded today in Jaffna.

After controlling the game in the opening day, the visitors took the remaining wicket early on the second day to get their 2nd turn to bat. Having a 43-run lead in the second innings the lads from Mount Lavinia got bowled out for a hapless 97 on a turning pitch that helped the bowlers.

17-year old right-arm quick Rathushan bowled his heart-out to claim 5 wickets in the second innings to restrict the strong Thomian batting line-up.

Chasing 140 to victory, the lads from Jaffna were 3 down for 4 runs at tea time. However, St. John’s boys pulled out their fighting spirit to drag the game and make it a draw at close of play.

Left-arm spinner Shannon Fernando was excellent with his bag of tricks as he claimed 4 wickets for the Thomians.
