Nimna Fernando steers De Mazenod to first innings win

Six matches of the Singer Schools’ U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were conducted today around the island.                                                  

St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa vs De Mazenod College, Kandana

De Mazenod College recorded a first innings win over St. Sebastian’s College in the traditional fixture between the two sides which concluded today at Sebastian’s College. The lads from Kandana posted solid 300 runs for 9 wickets in their first innings and made the declaration.

Right hander Nimna Fernando top scored with 89 runs while Pasindu Rajamunindra contributed with a valuable 58 runs for the visitors. The Moratuwa boys made 270 runs all out in their second innings. Tharusha Fernando and Nuwanidu Fernando batted well for the hosts as both made 60 plus scores. Off spinner Saliya Jude and leg spinner Romal Fernando took 7 wickets between them.

Nalanda College, Colombo vs Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala

The traditional fixture between Nalanda College and Maliyadeva College ended in a draw at the Maliyadeva College Grounds but the crucial first innings points were won by Nalanda College. After being 125 for 4 overnight, the visitors managed to post 259 runs, taking the first innings lead over the hosts.

Chamindu Wijesinghe (72) and Lakshitha Rasanjana (56) scored two half-tons for the Nalanda boys. The lads from Kurunegala began their second innings trailing by 4 runs and made 168 all out within 46.3 overs. Nalanda had to chase down 165 runs to win the match but they could only manage 56 for 2 wickets as umpires called stumps on day two.

Trinity College, Kandy vs S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia

The traditional fixture between Trinity College and S. Thomas’ College commenced today at the historic Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy. The hosts’ skipper won the toss and chose to bat first in their own backyard. Pubudu Bandara (76) and Ashan Lokuketiya (72*) led the way with the bat for the hosts as they posted 243 all out for the first innings. In reply, the visitors lost wickets in quick succession as they finished day one on 65 for 4.

Royal College, Colombo vs Wesley College, Colombo

The traditional fixture between Royal College and Wesley College commenced today at the Wesley College Grounds. After winning the toss, the Royal skipper opted to bat first but the decision backfired as they were bundled out for 150 runs. Off spinner Movin Subasinghe was the pick of the bowlers for Wesley College as he took 5 wickets for 48 runs. In reply, the hosts were shot out for just 104 runs. Themal Bandara picked up 4 wickets while Lahiru Madusanka picked up 3 wickets for Royal College. The visitors began their second innings 46 runs ahead and finished day one on 40 for 2.

The traditional fixture between St. Joseph’s College and St. Benedict’s College commenced today at St. Benedict’s College Grounds. The visiting skipper opted to field first and the decision paid off as they restricted a strong Josephian batting line up to 194 runs. Deputy Skipper Prithvi Jegarajasingham, who bowls right arm fast medium, was the main destroyer with the ball as he picked up 5 wickets for 27 runs. In reply, the hosts managed to score 107 runs for 6 wickets when umpires called stumps on day one.

St. Peter’s College, Colombo vs St. Anthony’s College, Kandy

The traditional fixture between St. Peter’s College and St. Anthony’s College commenced today at St. Anthony’s College Grounds. After being put into bat first, the Colombo lads were shot out for just 169 runs. Nimnaka Jayathilaka was instrumental in causing the batting collapse, claiming 6 wickets for 57 runs.  However, the hosts could not put on a better batting display than the hosts as they were bowled out for just 137 runs in their first innings. Left arm spinner Ameen Miflal continued his tricks with the ball in this season as he grabbed 5 wickets for 47 runs. The visitors were 8 runs for no wickets in their second innings at stumps on day one.
