Experienced campaigner, Nigel Ratwatte is all set to lead the champion club, Kandy SC, in the upcoming Dialog Rugby League 2019/20. The former Trinity, National sevens cap and CR & FC five-eighth was officially appointed as the Captain, yesterday at the Kandy SC Annual General Meeting.
Ratwatte first began chasing the oval ball when he was a little cub, playing for the U12 Trinity College team. He then captained the U13 team before his family migrated to Mauritius. But, that didn’t stop the youngster from continuing his sport. He played competitive rugby at the St. Nicholas’ Grammar School and later at the Black River Rugby Club, which earned him a place in the 2007 Mauritius U18 National team when they toured to Madagascar. The very next year he was selected to represent the Mauritius National team when he was still a schoolboy.
A year later he shifted to South Africa and played schools rugby before making his way back to our Island nation. After returning to Sri Lanka he represented CR & FC and Up Country ‘Lions’ for three years, which paved his way to Kandy SC on his return to the Hill Capital.
He already led the Kandy SC outfit in the Club Sevens where they were crowned unbeaten champs earlier this year.
However, with all the signings and players favouring the star-studded team, can Nigel add his name to the list of Captains who clinched the League title for Kandy SC? Only time will tell.
