SLC Major Limited Over Tournament

The Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) added more silverware to their trophy cabinet as they comprehensively beat CCC by 7 wickets in the final of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Major Limited Over Final today (19).

CCC who won the toss and batted first made 250/8 in their allotted 50 overs with ex-SSC player Minod Bhanuka top scoring with 49 runs.

After plenty of rain at the R.Premadasa stadium in the build up to the match, the final was one of those typical hot and humid days in Sri Lanka and it looked like a very good surface for batting.

CCC set themselves up nicely for a bigger total but a feature of their innings was batsmen getting starts and not going on to make a big one. Three batsmen in-fact went past the 30 run mark while two batsmen went past the 20 run mark with none of them making a half century.

The SSC openers Danushka Gunathilake and Sandun Weerakkody got them off to a dream start as the duo put on 212 runs, as they hardly seemed to be troubled by a toothless CCC bowling attack.

Both batsmen fell with victory in sight but SSC romped home with almost six overs and 7 wickets to spare. While Gunathilake’s 116 included 12 fours and 2 sixes, Weerakkody hit 14 boundaries in his 97 ball 101.

Dimuth Karunaratne – a strong contender to lead Sri Lanka in the World Cup – added the finishing touches as he remained unbeaten on 20* off 21 balls.

SSC’s Sachithra Senanayake ended the tournament as the top run getter with 445 runs, while Ragama CC’s right off spinner Nishan Peiris headed the bowling charts with 20 scalps.
