Bloomfield’s dramatic fall from Sri Lanka’s top league

Three matches of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Major League Tier A Plate championship ended today(9), bring the tournament to a close with Bloomfield being relegated from the top division.

Bloomfield ended their season with a brilliant batting display, but it was not a happy ending for the boys from Reid Avenue as they were placed last out of the 14 clubs that took part in the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Major League Tier A Tournament, which also confirmed their relegation to tier B come next season.

It was their new recruits for the 2017/18 season Ramesh Mendis and Anuk Fernando who hit unbeaten centuries as they put up 295/4 in their second innings when the match was called off.

Lahiru Jayakody also made a half century for Bloomfield while Badureliya SC skipper Alankara Asanka captured two wickets.

Tamil Union vs CCC

Tamil Union and CCC played out a tame draw with CCC securing vital first innings points to get out of relegation zone.

Tamil Union made a sedate 251/5 in 83.1 overs on day three, with Sithara Gimhan, Dinuk Wickramanayake and Tharanga Paranavitana all making half centuries.

The pick of the bowlers for CCC once again was former Sri Lanka Test cap and stalwart in club cricket Dinuka Hettiarachchi who captured five wickets as he ended up with eleven wickets in the match.

Moors vs Army

Moors completed their miracle come back after being bowled out for 90 on the opening day, as they recorded a 21 run outright victory over Army SC.

Army SC in pursuit of 194 for victory on the final day were precariously placed at 15/5 when play resumed.

Sri Lanka caps and experienced campaigners Seekuge Prasanna and Ajantha Mendis revived their innings to a certain extent with knocks of 51 and 48 respectively, but their lower order failed to wag as they were eventually bowled out for 172 runs.

Kosala Kulasekara was the star of the match for Moors SC with six wickets in the match and a vital half century in their second innings. Tharindu Ratnayake and HRC Dilshan also captured three wickets apiece to make sure Moors SC got out of the relegation zone.
