Asanka Pradeep Kumara and Malintha Yapa will be eyeing a quarter final berth in Men’s Beach Volleyball at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Beach Volleyball at the 2018 Commonwealth Games is scheduled to be held in the Gold Coast, Australia from April 6 to 12. The Beach Volleyball competition will be held at Coolangatta Beachfront. This will be the first time that Beach Volleyball will be held at the Commonwealth Games.

A total of 12 men’s teams will compete and the 12 teams were split into three groups of four, with the top two teams in each group along with the two best third place teams advancing to the knockout round.

The Sri Lanka duo qualified for the Commonwealth Games after finishing as top points getters amongst Commonwealth countries in the 2017 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Beach Tour tournaments.

New age group for DSI Schools’ Volleyball Championship

The 2018 DSI Supersport Schools’ Volleyball Championship..

Sri Lanka are drawn in Pool B alongside Cook/Miedzybrodzki of Scotland, Pedlow/Schachter of Canada and Kamara/Lombi of Sierra Leone. Samuel Pedlow and Sam Schachter are ranked 14th in the world while Seain Cook and Robin Miedzybrodzki are ranked 129th.

The Sri Lankan pair are 176th and Patrick Lombi and Abubakar Kamara are ranked 365th in the world. Asanka and Yapa are coached by Mahesh Perera.

Asanka/Yapa’s first match will be a crucial one against Scotland, as this will determine if they would finish in the group’s top two or wait for two best third place finishers to advance to the quarters, given they defeat Kamara/Lombi in their final game.
