Arthur receives demerit point for showing dissent

Mickey Arthur, the Pakistan coach, has received one demerit point and an official warning for a code of conduct violation in relation to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match,” the ICC stated on Friday (December 28).

On Day 3 of South Africa’s first Test against Pakistan, which the hosts won by six wickets, television umpire Joel Wilson had deemed Dean Elgar not out after the on-field umpires had referred the decision to check if Azhar Ali had taken the catch cleanly at first slip. Despite the soft signal being out, the third umpire ruled in favour of the batsman, which didn’t go well with the Pakistan coach.

Arthur “entered the TV umpire’s room and showed dissent at Mr. Wilson’s decision by first questioning him and then storming out of the room,” stated the ICC media release.

Arthur, who was in violation of Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, admitted to his offence and accepted the charges proposed by match referee David Boon.
