The second day of the All Island School Games Athletic Championships concluded today (31) with spectacular performances by the youngsters. The record tally added up to 15 in just two days of competition, an indication of massive progress in Schools track and field. 

S Mithunraj brought glory to Hartley College, Jaffna with a New Meet Record in the Boys’ Shot Putt event with a throw of 15.95m, surpassing HMIL Bandara’s record of 15.67m established last year. Mithunraj continued his winning streak in national school athletics outdoing his fellow competitors Akalanka Wijesooriya and T.B.Janith Bonifus, the two lads from St. Peter’s College  – Colombo 04 coming in second and third place respectively. 

It was an easy leap for D. F. Nethmi Niwarthana of Weeriyagama Maha Vidyalaya – Hambanthota, as she grabbed her Gold with a new Meet Record. Nethmi’s performance was recorded at 5.29m in the Under 14 Girls’ Long Jump, beating DS Milani Romeshika’s record established last year. It was a close competition between the remaining pack with W.Harini Adithya Pranandu and W.G.C.R.Wickramage battling it out for the second and third place. 

B.M.R.D.Bandara of Wekada Maha Vidyalaya – Chilaw renewed the previous record held at 48.16 seconds with the new timing of 47.53 seconds in the Boys’ Under 18 400m event. The much awaited 400m event alone grabbed another two records – in the Under 16 Boys’ and Girls’ events. H.H.R.S.Jayasundara of Sir John Kothalawala M.V. – Kurunegala showcased marvellous resolve, finishing with a timing of 48.91 seconds while his fellow competitor K.Vinosh Kumara Silva of Katukurunda Roman Catholic College won the silver with a 49.92s run. Both Jayasundara and Vinosh outran the previous meet record held at a timing of 49.95 seconds by Oulen Kularathna of Royal College Colombo 07. D.M.T.D.Karunarathna of Walala A. Rathnayaka Central College– Menikhinna took out a New Meet Record for the Under 16 Girls’ category with a timing of 56.54 seconds. 

Day 01 – Schools games; Jaffna conquers Pole Vault

The most striking performance emerged from the Boys’ Under 18 1500m event, where the top four athletes on track managed to beat the previous record. W.M.P.M.D.Wijerathna of Dharmaraja College – Kandy managed to renew his record from 2018, representing Anurudda Kumara NS, Nawalapitiya with a new time of 4:01.5 minutes. His fellow competitors B.N.D.Bulugahapitiya from Berrewaerts College- Kandy, Sanjaya Srinath of Magalakanda Buddhist Junior School and G.D.L.A. Garusinghe of Senanayaka Maha Vidyalaya – Madampe surpassed the record obtaining second, third and fourth places respectively. 

The youngest age group of Under 12 was also able to uplift the gaming standards on the track. Shewan Abeysinghe of Lyceum International School Nugegoda established a new meet record with a timing of 13.26 seconds in the Boys’ 100m event while Varanga Vihangasara brought glory to Sinhala Madya Maha Vidyalaya – Trincomalee with a timing of 13.36 seconds beating the previous record and emerging second. Ravidi Wenurika marked her name on the record list for the 100m Girls’ race with a timing of 13.59. Nethra Samadhi of Vijitha Madya Maha Vidyalaya –  Dikwella, Mathara reclaimed the new record for the High Jump event, flying high over the bar of 1.41m. 

  1. Dadsitha and V.Visopika of Chava Hindu College – Jaffna maintained the Northern dominance in the Pole Vault event, where Dasitha broke the Under 20 record with a leap of 3.35m, surpassing the previous record at 3.23m set by Aniththa Jagadeshwaran of Mahajana College – Jaffna back in 2014. 

Another breathtaking performance emerged in the Girls’ Under 18 Javelin Throw event with D.M.I.Hasanthi breaking a 10 year record for Walala A. Rathnayaka. Her performance of 47.77m smashed the previous record held by K C Kavindya of Gateway College that stood at a distance of 39.49m. H. A. V. L. K. Hapuarachchi and R.D.H.Rathnayaka following with a silver and bronze also managed to beat the previous record as well. 

Strong 18 to represent Sri Lanka at the World Military Games

Sachini Samarasekara of St. Bridget’s Convent – Colombo 07established a record of 10.34meters in the Under 14 Girls’ Shot Putt event.  Her fellow competitor Esadi Sakithma of Ananda Madya Maha Vidyalaya – Elpitiya managed to just equal the previous record maintaining a silver with a distance of 10.05meters.
