South Asia’s new Fastest man

Yupun Priyadarshana earned the much-valued title of the “Fastest man in South Asia”, completing a scintillating run in the 100m at Anhalt 2020 in Germany a short while ago.

Coming out of a long pause in Athletics, the Italy based sprinter competed in the Anhalt meet in Dessau, Germany on the 8th of September. He was able to clock a timing of 10:16s to oust his teammate Himasha Eshan from the top spot for the fastest time in the event by a Sri Lankan.

Himasha Eshan not only held the Sri Lankan record, but he was also the fastest man in South Asia since the 2016 South Asian Games win, where he clocked 10.26s. Priyadarshana snatched both titles away with his timing of 10.16s, bettering Eshan’s Sri Lankan record of 10.22s in the process. He was closely followed by local Denis Almaz, coming in second with a time of 10.18s.

Former national record holder Eshan had this to say about his teammate’s achievement

Priyadarshana, who is a regular in the Men’s 4x100m relay team, played a key role in Sri Lanka’s Gold medal winning run at the 2019 South Asian Games in Kathmandu, Nepal.
