Women’s Cricket – Air Force and Navy come out on top

Air Force SC and Navy SC recorded wins on day 5 of the Women’s Division I Limited Overs tournament. The teams overcame Army SC and Colts CC respectively, putting them at the top of the league standings.

 

Air Force SC vs Army SC

Air Force SC overcame a strong Army SC outfit at the Rifle Green Grounds in Colombo to record their 3rd win of the tournament. 

The rain affected game was reduced to 44 overs a side with the Air Force Women taking first lease of the wicket having won the toss.

Tight bowling from the Army SC bowlers kept the strong Air Force SC batting line-up in check right from the word go. None of the batters were able to push on from the starts they got and Air Force SC was bowled out for 134 with just over an over to spare. 

Sudarshika Bandara was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 3 wickets while Nilakshika Silva and Niluka Karunaratne chipped in with 2 wickets each.

Chasing a modest total of 134, Army SC put up a strong effort but fell short by just 17 runs. They were bowled out for 117 in just 34.3 overs with Air Force SC’s go to bowler of the tournament Oshadie Ranasinghe picking up 3 wickets for just 16 runs.

Air Force SC – 134 all out in 42.3 overs: Ama Kanchana 28, Chamari Polgampola 25, Sudarshika Bandara 3/24, Nilakshika Silva 2/19, Niluka Karunaratne 2/20.

Army SC – 117 all out in 34.3 overs: Nimali Perera 26, Rebecca Vandort 21, Oshadi Ranasinghe 3/16

 

Navy SC vs Colts CC

Navy SC cruised to yet another comfortable win when they took on the Colts Women at the Colts Cricket Grounds in Colombo. With 4 big wins under their belts Navy SC are definitely the in form team of the tournament and Colts CC were no match for them on the day.

Having being put into bat by the home team, Navy SC worked their way to a respectable 228 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their 50 overs. 

National Skipper Shashikala Siriwardene and Prasadini Weerakkody were once again amongst the runs for Navy SC. Off spinner Janakanthi Mala helped restrict the visiting team with figures of 2 for 39 in her ten overs.

In reply Colts CC could only manage 105 runs in what was yet another heavy loss. Youngster Harshitha Samarawickrama top scored with 30 at the top of the innings but a win was never on the cards as the Navy bowlers kept a strangle hold on proceedings with Inoka Ranaweera and Suwini De Alwis picking up 3 wickets a piece.
