The SLC U19 Team registered a thrilling 3-wicket win over the visiting West Indies U19 Team in the 50-over warmup game, played today (25th August) at CCC Grounds, Colombo.
SLC U19 Skipper Hiran Jayasundara won the toss and opted to bowl first. The hosts started off brilliantly with the ball, dismissing the first 4 top order wickets of the West Indies batting lineup for just 42 runs.
West Indies No. 3 batter Joshua Dorne and No. 6 batter Steve Wedderburn showed some resistance with the bat, adding a 55-run stand for the 5th wicket.
Sri Lanka hit back through the middle overs thanks to a brilliant spell from the left-arm spinner Yuri Koththigoda, who picked up 3 quick wickets. However, West Indies No. 9 batter Nathan Sealy scored a fighting half-century to guide the visitors to a respectable total.
In reply, the hosts got off to a flying start as the opening pair Hirun Kapurubandara and Vishen Halambage put on a quick 36 runs off 27 balls for the first wicket before the latter ran himself out for 12 runs in the 5th over of the innings.
However, the rest of the batters were unable to capitalize on the blistering start as they continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Subsequently, No. 4 batter Supun Waduge came up with a brilliant match-defining knock with the assistance of No. 9 batter Manula Kularatne, to carry the hosts over the line at the end.
The duo added an unbeaten 74-run partnership for the 8th wicket, guiding the hosts to a thrilling win. Waduge top-scored for the SLC U19 with a brilliant 84 runs off 105 balls, with 9 fours and a six.
