Australia vice-captain walks straight off Darwin’s Marrara Oval after being hit by a Hazlewood bouncer in intra-squad match.
Australia vice-captain David Warner retired hurt early in his innings but is recovering after being struck on the side of the neck midway through the second session of day two of the intra-squad match in Darwin.
Warner appeared shaken but OK after the blow, dropping his bat and removing his helmet as Steve Smith came from the slips cordon to check on his well-being.
The opener walked off the field unassisted, with Bupa Support Team doctor Richard Saw by his side, headed for the change rooms where he was assessed by Dr Saw, with ice applied to the impact site.
The left-hander was dismissed for four in the first innings and had only made two and faced 14 balls when he appeared to be through his attempted hook from a Josh Hazlewood bouncer early and was hit, denying him some much-needed time in the middle before Australia’s two-Test tour of Bangladesh.
The 14-man squad departs for the subcontinent nation on Friday, with the first Test to be played in the capital city of Dhaka from August 27.
Earlier, Steve Smith made 84 retired and Glenn Maxwell 45 before the Smith XI declared at 6-181 in reply to the Warner XI’s first innings total of 6-360 declared.
