More than 650 athletes from 35 Asian Countries will vie for honours in the 16th Asian Junior Athletics Championship in the Taipei City which will be held from 12th-15th June 2014.
It was first day of the 16th Junior Asian Athletics Championship Taipei City in Taiwan which was a mixed day of glory for the Lankan troops. Himasha Eashan won his heat in the 100 meters and qualified for the semi-final. Nirmali Madushika came 3rd place in her heat to qualify for the semi-final in the 400 meters. Vinura Lakmal came in 3rd place as he clocked 48.32 seconds in his heat but was unlucky not to qualify for the final as the 8th best clocked time was 48.25 seconds. However Vidusha Lakshani came in 3rd place to win the Bronze medal in the women`s triple jump to bring joy finally for the Sri Lankan contingent.
In the after-noon session, last year’s world youth championship silver medalist Bo-Kai Huang opened the medal hunt for China with a marvelous 5.25m clearance in pole vault. Triple jumpers Rong Wang (13.64m) and Xiao-Hong Li (13.62m) battled it out for the first two positions with Sri Lankan Vidusha Lakshani filled the podium on her third place leap of 12.87.
