Venora Last Man Stands - Race to Cape Town is on

Venora Last Man Stands, Sri Lanka amateur T20 cricket tournament commenced around Colombo and its suburbs last week.

The tournament commenced on the 27th of August with the semi-finals and final scheduled to be played on the 24th of September. Champions of the Venora Last Man Stands Sri Lanka 2017 will be eligible to play the world championship in Cape Town, South Africa, with a sponsorship of around 3 million rupees on offer. The runner-up of the tournament will go home with a cash prize of Rs. 100,000.

A press briefing for the event was held recently at the Galadari Hotel and LMS Sri Lanka Franchisee, Sheran Fernando shared his views to the media, “We are very excited to conduct this tournament. Around 30 teams will be participating this time, which is the most number of teams since we started off last year. We are hoping to hold the world championship in Sri Lanka in 2019 or 2021.” He said.

Last Man Stands, the new way of playing cricket was invented by two Englishmen, Bjorn Briggs and Wayne Greve in 2005. Initially made popular among the amateur leagues in England, soon many teams around the globe caught up with the trend and currently over 2000 teams play the format. Last Man Stands is the biggest amateur cricket competition in the world and is currently played in 14 countries.

The format is T20, with each team comprising of 8 players. LMS, as any other format of cricket, carries the standard set of rules, buts has its own twists and turns as well. LMS maintains its own website in which player details, statistics and rankings are offered. This enables players to compare performances subject to their local LMS T20 competitions through a global platform.

All player and team statistics are recorded and uploaded come the conclusion of every game. As mentioned prior, this brings together players in terms comparing individual and team performances.

The on-field umpires are given a device in which the scores are maintained and are shared live on the LMS official website. This permits players as well as spectators to follow the game live as it happens.
