Manchanayake leads Royal to victory; Mahinda’s Dhanuja stacks up 169*

U19 Inter-Schools Cricket Tournament 2022/23

1250

Three traditional encounters of the ongoing Schools U19 Cricket season came to an end today (4).

Royal College defeated Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa at Reid Avenue today to make the cut to the spotlight of the games played today. The run fest between Mahinda College, Galle and Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala was a close contender behind, as 3 centuries and over 800 runs were scored in that game.

The Royalist skipper Dasis Manchanayake, who has always impressed for his alma-mater right from the time he made it to the first-eleven team at 15, put up yet another brilliant performance with both bat and ball to secure a 10-wicket win. He was instrumental with 3 wickets with the ball in hand in Prince of Wales’ first innings, and became the front-runner with the bat for Royal scoring, 91 runs in a winning cause. He was also well supported by Disas Sanvindu, who made 61 runs not out.

Ranuka Malaviarachchi picked up 4 wickets in the first innings of the visitors, while Ramiru Perera repeated the feat in their second innings to wrap up the game.

In Hambantota, Mahinda College was knitting up a fitting response to Maliyadeva College’s mammoth 421 runs on the previous day. Dhanuja Induwara, the Captain of Mahinda College, played an outstanding knock of 169 runs and remained unbeaten on the crease at the end of the game.

The right-handed lower middle-order batsman racked up the runs at almost a run-a-ball, with 6 sixes and 14 fours in his innings. His brisk innings got Mahinda College to 400 runs at close of play, helping them to finish the game with a respectful draw.

Tharusha Dilshan of Mahinda College played second fiddle to his Skipper, scoring a valuable 117 runs.

The other game of the day was an uneventful draw between St. Anthony’s College, Kandy and St. Benedict’s College, Kotahena, which, during the last few hours of the game, looked as if there could be a result which could go in favour of either team. However, it still ended in a draw.
