Three quarter-finals of the ongoing U19 Schools Cricket Tournament kicked off today in Colombo & Kandy.

Trinity College decided to bowl first in their quarter-final clash against Royal College at Asgiriya Grounds in Kandy.

Royals showed rather poor discipline with the bat, bowling out for 114 runs while Bulan Weerathunga was the only batter to cross the 20-run mark. In the bowling department, Tharana Wimaladarma, Kaveen Heshan Gamage & Dinuka Thennakoon bagged three wickets apiece.

Royals’ seam bowler, Ranuka Malaviarachchi produced a superb spell of 5/21, but that wasn’t enough to put Trinitians under their 1st innings total as they posted 195 runs, with Lakwin Abeysinghe scoring a solid 44 as their chief scorer. Meantime, the stumps have been called on day 1.

St. Joseph-Wesley battle commenced today at St. Joseph’s College Grounds in Colombo which is also part of the quarter-final round.

After having won the toss, Josephians batted throughout the day for 102 overs as they scored 218 for losing 9 wickets. Naren Muralitharan was their top scorer with a 243-ball 67 while Uvin Perera picked 3/21 for Wesley College.

Another crucial QF game commenced today between Isipathana College & Mahinda College at Colts Grounds in Colombo.

After putting into bat first, Mahinda College performed well with the bat for a major part of their innings before declaring on 300/8. Once again, in-form batter, Dhanuja Induwara was the chief scorer with an 84-run knock while opener Hareen Achintha & Hiruna Gallage scored 74 & 68, respectively.

At the end of day 1, Pathanians were on 9/0 in just five overs.

The 3rd Annual Cricket Encounter playing for Michael Tissera – Roy Dias Trophy between St. Thomas College & St. Peter’s College was held today for the 2nd day at Bambalapitiya.

From the overnight score of 15/1, Peterites bowled out for 110 this morning with Kavindu Dias & Nathan Caldera picking three scalps apiece.

With that low-scored first innings, St. Peter’s had to follow on too. But somehow, they managed to bat much better this time where they scored 212/7 courtesy of Kavika Jayasundara’s unbeaten hundred. Meantime, the match ended in a draw with S. Thomas College registering first innings win.

In the other traditional matches, Kenuka Pihilianga registered an eight-wicket haul against Lumbini College while Kavindu Amameth stroked a 96-ball 129 versus Prince of Wales College.
