Maliyadeva seal their semi-final spot

A quarter-final match of Division I Tier ‘A’ group between Maliyadeva College and St. Sebastian’s College ended today in a draw at St. Sebastian’s College Grounds, Matara where Devans booked their place in the semi-finals with the first innings lead.

From a comfortable position of 137/3, St. Sebastian’s batters were able to add only 87 runs losing the remaining 7 wickets this morning. Overnight set batter, Vimath Dinsara was their top scorer with an 86-run knock.

With a slight first-innings advantage, Devans started their 2nd innings before being bowled out for 171 runs. Skipper Amesh Thennakoon notched up a fifty while the first innings’ half-centurion fell 2 runs short of another fifty this time. On the other hand, Sandeesh Fernando produced a stunning spell where he managed to pick 7 wickets for only 62 runs.

Chasing 213 to win, St. Sebastian’s batters got a bit of a quick start but managed to get only 105/6 in 14 overs and in the meantime, the match ended in a draw.

Finally, Maliyadeva College progressed to the semi-finals of Division I Tier ‘A’ and they will take on Trinity College in the semis.
