Aaqil, Piyumal star as Ananda stutter against St. Anthony’s

U19 Inter Schools Cricket Tournament 2022/23


Two 2-day matches of the U19 Inter Schools Cricket Tournament were played today (30th January) at Colombo and Matara. 

St. Anthony’s College took the upper hand against Ananda College on day one of their traditional encounter, which began today at Ananda College Grounds in Colombo.

Having won the toss, the visitors opted to bat first and they took the maximum use of the batting friendly conditions, posting 268 runs on the board. Mohomed Aaqil was the star performer with the bat as he top scored with a knock of 73 runs for St. Anthony’s College.

Ayesh Shashimal of Ananda College caught everyone’s attention with a superb spell of 5 for 40. In reply, the hosts faltered with the bat, being restricted to 56/8 at the close of play on day 1. Kaveesha Piyumal was brilliant with the ball for the Antonians as he snared 4 scalps for 17 runs.

Meanwhile, Maris Stella College dominated the proceedings in the traditional encounter against St. Servatius’ College, which commenced today at Uyanwatta Stadium in Matara.

Though, St. Servatius’ won the toss and opted to bat first, they were unable to put on a substantial score on the board as they were bowled out for 171. Chiran Neththaru was the only batter who contributed with a significant score (86) to the total for the Matara boys.

Hasthika De Silva and Dilash Fernando were a delight to watch with the ball in hand as they took 3 wickets apiece for Maris Stella College.

In reply, Maris Stella College were in a strong position with the bat at the close of play on day one with a score of 121/2, with the top order batter Shehan Adithya remaining unbeaten on 55.
