Richmond College, Galle beat S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia by 5 wickets in the U19 Division 1 Schools Limited Overs Cricket Tournament, played today (27th September) at Mount Lavinia.

Richmond College Skipper Tharinda Nirmal won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first. The decision turned out to be gold as they could restrict the strong Thomian batting lineup for just 148 runs in 46.5 overs.

The Skipper Romesh Mendis (44) and Charuka Peiris (38) chipped in with useful contributions with the bat for S. Thomas’ College. Sri Lanka U19 cap Malsha Tharupathi was the pick of the bowlers for Richmond College as he bagged 3 scalps for 41 runs.

In reply, Richmond College got off to a poor start, losing first 5 wickets for 60 runs. However, the wicket-keeper batter Janeth Kaushal and No. 7 batter Tharupathi rescued the Richmond innings, putting on a match-winning partnership of 91 runs off 94 balls for the 6th wicket, which enabled them to cross over the line comprehensively at the end.

Tharupathi, who starred with the ball earlier in the day, showed his skills with the bat, scoring a match winning knock for the Richmondites. His blistering knock of 65 runs came off 51 balls including 3 fours and 5 sixes at a strike rate of 127.45.
