Kavindu Nirmana takes Richmondites to first innings honors

Four 2-day encounters of the U19 Inter-Schools Cricket Tournament were played today (20th December) at several venues across the island.

Richmond College managed to take honors in the drawn Tier ‘A’ two-day encounter against Prince of Wales College, which ended today at SLAOC International Cricket Stadium in Dombagoda. After being 92/3 at stumps on day one, Richmond College went onto post 304/9 for their first innings before declaring the innings in the 86th over.

Kavindu Nirmana (90) and Chehan Subasinghe (49) were the chief run-getters for the boys from the South. Prince of Wales College began their 2nd innings trailing by 71 runs and posted 52/4 at the close of play on day two.

The Tier ‘B’ two-day encounter between St. Peter’s College and St. Aloysius’ College also ended in a draw today at Peterson Grounds in Colombo. The Peterites resumed their 2nd innings 61/1 on day two, but a batting collapse saw them bowled out for 213, losing 9 wickets for 152 runs in quick time.

Induwara Udena, who picked up 3 wickets in the first innings, once again stood out with the ball for St. Aloysius’ College, taking 6 for 80 and leading his match tally into 9 wickets for 89 runs. St. Aloysius’ College was set a target of 188 runs to win, but they only managed to post 147/8 as Umpires called stumps on day two.

Meanwhile, the Tier ‘A’ two-day encounter between S. Thomas’ College and Maliyadeva College got underway today at Mount Lavinia. Having won the toss, the visitors decided to bat first, but they did not have a great outing in the middle as they were restricted to just 122.

The Thomian bowlers Kavindu Dias, Nathan Caldera and Abheeth J. Paranawidana excelled with the ball, taking 3 wickets each for S. Thomas’ College. In reply, the hosts also had a tough time with the bat as they lost 5 wickets in the process of posting 115 runs on the board.
