Five matches of the Singer Schools Under 19 Division 1 Cricket Tournament 2018/19 were worked off today (13th February).

Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa Vs Zahira College, Colombo

The second day of the group ‘B’ fixture between Prince of Wales College and Zahira College commenced today in the Cambrians’ backyard with Zahira College on 127/5. Left-arm spinner Kaumal Nanayakkara’s 5-fer made sure visitors were all out for 210 but not before they surpassed POW’s 1st innings score.

The Cambrians could only add 154 in their 2nd innings as allrounder Mohammad Rifath bagged another 5-wicket haul. Having a target of 132 to chase, the Zahira batting line up collapsed like a pile of cards within 15 overs to end up at 22/6 at stumps. Another valiant effort from Nanayakkara (5/09) wasn’t enough to grant a Cambrian win. He finished with a 10-fer in front of his name.

Match was drawn with first innings points to Zahira College.

Mahanama College, Colombo Vs St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa

Mahanama College earned more credits at the of their group C fixture against St. Joseph Vaz College with first innings points at the Air Force grounds, Katunayake.

Mahanama declared their 2nd innings at 200/5 after a blazing 92 by opener Pawantha Weerasinghe but couldn’t knock over St. Joseph Vaz in the 2nd innings to win as they could only snatch 5 of opposition wickets.

Sri Lanka U19 captain Nipun Dananjaya’s all-round performance was the highlight throughout the match.

The Group A encounter ended in favor of the home team at Darley Road, after Devapathiraja College batsmen couldn’t handle the opposition bowlers and were bundled out for a cheap 137, giving the Josephians an easy 37-run target, which they chased down within 10 overs to win the match.

The Peterites will be disappointed with their below-par performance with the bat after winning the toss and choosing to bat at the Galle stadium. Star performers like Santhush Gunathilake and Shivan Perera’s bats couldn’t do much talking today as Akila Mendis gave the advantage to Dharmasoka College with his 4 for 33.

Dashing left-hander Kavindu Ranasinghe led home team’s batting line up with a busy 71 and was assisted well by 17-year-old Risitha Perera.

The St. Anthony’s College openers survived a grey 3 overs at the sunset to remain unscathed at stumps.
