The Day 1 of the U18 Schools Elite 7s Rugby Tournament 2025 organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association, was worked off at the Bogambara Stadium on the 30th of August 2025 in Kandy with the participation of 23 Teams. The teams were divided into 8 Groups, and battled it out for a place in the cup segment on Day 2.

This is how the games went off in each pool.

Pool A

This pool ended up being the pool of death. Isipathana College overcame St. Aloysius College 45-00. Ananda College also managed to notch up a big win against St. Aloysius College 43-00.

The game of the day was the big one between Isipathana and Ananda. It was a tightly contested affair and Isipathana just managed to pull off a last minute try to draw the game 10-10.

Taking the points scored into consideration, Isipathana just pip Ananda to fight in the Cup Segment.

Pool B

Siri Piyarathana College did not take part in the tournament which gave walk-overs to St. Peter’s and Mahanama.

It was a winner takes it all clash, and St. Peter’s got the better of Mahanama to win the game 17-07 and secure a place in the cup segment.

Pool C

The group with one of the biggest surprises.

St. Joseph’s College got their first win over Nugawela Central College, where they ran riot to score 31-00. Sri Sumangala College also managed to win against Nugawela Central College 35-00.

This set up a big clash, between St. Joseph’s College and Sri Sumangala. A big performance by Summa, got them a famous victory over the Joes 21-00. Sri Sumangala will play in the cup, and St. Joseph’s will have to settle for the bowl.

Pool D

D.S Senanayake College were the firm favourites in this pool and they lived up to their tag. Comprehensively beating St. Benedicts College and Science College 40-00 and 29-05 respectively.

DS will battle it out in the cup segment, while Science College who pulled off a 24-00 win against will play in the bowl.

Pool E

This pool was always going to come down to Zahira College and St. Anthony’s. Both teams overcame the challenge from St. Sylvester’s College 47-00 and 43-00 respectively.

In the crunch game, it was Zahira College who managed to edge past St. Anthony’s 21-12 to book a spot in the cup segment.

Pool F

Wesley College and Kingswood College locked horns with Sri Sumangala College Panadura in this group.

Wesley beat Sri Sumangala 40-05, while Kingswood thumped Sri Sumangala 38-05.

In the final game of this pool, Wesley College got the better of their traditional rivals, Kingswood College 21-12.

Pool G

In Pool G, it was Vidyartha College who reigned supreme. They overcame Maliyadewa College and Prince of Wales College 29-14 and 45-10 respectively.

In the battle for the wooden spoon in this group, Prince of Wales College beat Maliyadewa College 31-05.

Pool H

Dharmaraja College started off with a shocker against Lumbini College, as the boys from Lumbini pulled off a famous 28-07 victory.

Thurstan College beat Dharmaraja College 17-12 to book their spot in the bowl segment, while Lumbini College secured a position in the cup segment by scraping through to beat Thurstan College 17-12.

With the top teams from each Pool qualifying for the Cup/Plate Segment, the 2nd and 3rd place teams will battle it out in the Bowl and Shield Segments respectively.

Shield Segment

 

Quarter Final 1 – Nugawela Central College vs St. Benedict’s College

Quarter Final 3 – Maliyadewa College vs Dharmaraja College

St. Aloysius College has received a ‘bye’ in the Shield Quarterfinals and directly qualify for the Shield Semi Finals.

Day 2 promises some fantastic rugby, and is sure to bring big wins and some massive upsets as well.
