Spinners A.K. Tyrone and Priyamal Perera will have to undergo bio mechanical tests in Perth, Australia to determine whether their bowling action is legal after they were reported for suspect bowling actions during the just concluded ICC Youth World Cup in UAE.
The two Sri Lanka Under-19 players were reported for suspect bowling actions during the just concluded ICC Youth World Cup but were allowed to bowl pending tests down under.
At least one of them were reported just prior to the World Cup by a Sri Lankan match official when Sri Lanka Under-19 were engaged in a three match series against Australia Under-19 here in Colombo.
The Sri Lankan spinners and other players who were reported for suspect action will be tested in Australia.
According to sources, Sri Lanka Cricket has decided to send Richmond College player Tyrone for tests in Australia but St. Joseph’s player Perera will have to undergo remedial action here before he is considered to be sent for tests.
“SLC has decided not to send Perera for tests. The fact that Perera is not a front line bowler and the local experts opining that he needs to undergo remedial action to rectify his action have made it difficult for SLC to take a positive decision on Perera,” a source close to Sri Lanka Under-19 told The Island.
An expert who had followed many Sri Lanka junior bowlers said that though Tyrone had been reported for suspect action he is likely to be cleared following tests in Australia.
“Tyrone had been tested by Sri Lankan experts on a previous occasion as well. It is very hard to detect with the naked eye. Tests there and analysis of video footage from Youth World Cup is likely to clear him,” said the expert.
The two spinners are not the first Sri Lankan juniors to be called for suspect actions and required tests in Australia to determine whether their action was legal.
Former Sri Lanka Under-19 speedster Sanitha de Mel and spinner Rushan Jaleel and Sandun Weerakkody (bowling part time) are among others to have had been reported for suspect action during Youth International matches.
