Hong Kong triumph in the final leg of Asian 7’s series in Beijing after beating Korea 36 – 19 and also become the overall winners of 2014 Asian 7s Series. South Korea became overall second after beating Japan twice in the series in Hong Kong and Beijing 7’s.  Tuskers finished 4th in all three legs.

3/4th place

The Japanese first team was not in the reckoning as they just played the Gold Coast 7’s last weekend, However,  the Tuskers gave a good fight with an early chip and chase by Joseph Dunn where the bounce coming in his favour resulted in him scoring under  the post. The inexperienced Japanese side was included with an eighteen year old who played with a great power, eventually the Japanese came with two tries in quick succession to lead past the Tuskers to 19 – 07.

Sudarshana Muthuthantri was outstanding with his defensive techniques, the debutant Dulaj Perera also made a point to why he was included in the team mostly playing as first reciever. Perera ran side ways and passed it to Danushka Ranjan to score his 5th try in Beijing 7’s. (SL 12 : 19 JPN)

The experienced Gayan Weerarathne went high on a tackle which resulted in a dose from the referee who flashed a yellow. With an extra man Japanese got full use of it as they scored one more try to lead pass 24 – 12. It was too little too late for the Tuskers as Dulaj Perera made a brilliant solo try running 75m to touch down in the right corner and provided with a difficult conversion. (FT  : SL 19 – 24 JPN)

Cup semi-final

Hong Kong played with a great pace and physicality to run down the Tuskers 28 – 00. Wakawulagi Emori the one who has already established himself as the Tusker’s main threat to any opposition was out early due to concussion. As a result Woodward and Rohan Varty took the game away from the Tuskers maintaining the ball position and territory. Sri Lanka did not have much to prove but the compact defence allowed Hong Kong to ease pass for the third time in the Asian 7’s series.

Cup quarter final

Early on today Sri Lanka beat Philippines who 25 – 12 after leading 17 – 05 in the half time. Wagawulagi Emori was outstanding once again for Tuskers with two tries in this match. Danushka Ranjan also adding one more try with a superb 75m run lead the Tuskers in strong position. There was a bit aggression from the two sides at the end of the final whistle which  somehow ended in handshakes. Mithun hapugoda lead the team brilliantly, he was astounding with his pace and decision making in the middle.  His try was well collected by him and sprinted in to the right corner beating the sweeper which was the try of the match.

Lady Tuskers

After a nail biting win against Singapore in pool match Sri Lanka women thrashed the Philippines women 42 points to nil. This was the highest score for the ladies in this year’s Asian 7’s series. Thanuja Weerakkody last year captain was on song with a hat-trick of tries. Captain Ayesha Perera, Anusha Attanayake, Sandeepa Sandamali played their hearts out in the plate semi final

It was a rematch between Sri Lanka and Thailand in Hong Kong 7s and the ladies from the peal island beat Thai 19 – 14 with an extra time try by Anusha Attanayake.  However it was a different story in Beijing as the Thai women easily overcame with 25 – 05 and to be the plate champions.
