Trinity and Ananda on top in day one of pre-quarter finals

Two pre quarter finals and two traditional matches in the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were conducted today around the island.

Trinity College, Kandy vs St. Aloysius College, Galle

Trinity College and St. Aloysius College met each other today at the historic Asgiriya Stadium, in one of the pre-quarter finals of the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament. Visiting skipper won the toss and batted first but they could only score 130 runs all out for their first innings. Right handed batsman Ashen Bandara, who represented Sri Lanka in the recently concluded U-19 World Cup, was the top scorer for the lads from Galle with 49 runs.

Left arm spinner Vimukthi Nethumal was the pick of the bowlers for the Kandy boys taking 4 wickets for 43 runs. Hasitha Boyagoda, who is renowned for his stroke play with the bat, showed his bowling skills picking up 3 wickets for 24 runs with his off spin. In reply, the strong Trinity batting line up also struggled with the bat as they finished day one on 151 runs for 9 wickets. Hasintha Jayasuriya and Ashan Lokuketiya scored 37 runs each for the lads from Kandy. Left arm spinner Kavika Dilshan was the pick of the bowlers for the Galle boys as he took 4 wickets for 50 runs. Match will continue tomorrow for day two.

St. Peter’s College, Colombo vs Ananda College, Colombo

Another pre-quarter final between St. Peter’s College and Ananda College commenced today at St. Peter’s College grounds. The visiting skipper won the toss and rightly called to bowl first, as they restricted the strong St. Peter’s College batting line-up  for 128 runs. Deneth Nissanka and Asel Sigera shared 7 scalps between them.

In reply, the visitors managed to go past the hosts’ first innings score as they posted 169 runs for 7 wickets at stumps on day one. Left handed stroke maker Kanishka Ranthilakage top scored for the visitors with 51 runs while left arm spinner Ameen Miflal starred with the ball for the hosts picking up 3 wickets for 59 runs. Match will continue tomorrow for day two.

President’s College, Kotte vs St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa

St. Joseph Vaz College comprehensively defeated President’s College by 10 wickets in the traditional fixture between the two sides which concluded today at Godigamuwa. After being 274 runs for 7 wickets overnight, St. Joseph Vaz College skipper made the declaration today at 320 runs for 8 wickets. Yohan Peiris stroked a magnificent century for the Wennappuwa boys.

Left arm spinner Hasindu Pramuka was the pick of the bowlers for the lads from Kotte as he picked up 4 wickets for 106 runs. President’s College batsmen began their second innings 207 runs behind and scored exactly 207 runs all out by setting a target of just one run to win the match for St. Joseph Vaz College.

The traditional fixture between Gurukula College and St. Anthony’s College commenced today at St. Anthony’s College grounds. The visiting skipper won the toss and had no hesitation to bat first on a batting friendly surface at Wattala. The visitors posted a mammoth score of 353 runs for 7 wickets when umpires called stumps on day one. Right handed batsman Malindu Viduranga remained unbeaten on 88 runs while Kemira Nayanatharu and Pathum Mahesh scored 65 runs each for the Kelaniya boys. Off spinner Kavindu Maduka was the pick of the bowlers for the Antonians with 3 wickets for 43 runs.
