Thurstan and Ananda advance to the semi-finals with comprehensive wins

Defending Champions, Thurstan College and high-riding Ananda College booked their semi-final berths when they easily won their respective quarter-final games against Richmond College and Lumbini College on Monday in the under 19 all-island limited overs tournament 2015. 

 

Thurstan College vs Richmond College

The strong Richmond batsmen put up a very poor batting display as Isitha Wijesundara’s brilliant spell of bowling helped Thurstan defeat the boys from Galle by 7 wickets at FTZ Katunayake grounds.

Richmond skipper Sithara Gimhan won the toss and elected to bat first but their innings lasted only 27 overs as they were bundled out for 82 runs. Isitha Wijesundara picked up 5 wickets for just 23 runs while Sithara and Wanindu made 38 and 33 respectively. Thurstan easily strolled to victory in the 17th over with right-handed Kasun Abeyrathne slamming an unbeaten 47.

Chief Scores:

Richmond College – 82 all out in 27 overs: Sithara Gimhan 38, Wanidu Hasaranga 33, Ishitha Wijesundara 5/23.

Thurstan College – 85/3 in 16.4 overs: Kasun Abeyrathne 47*, Rusiru Munasinghe 14*, Avindu Theekshana 2/10. 

Ananda College vs Lumbini College

Left-arm leg spinner Asel Sigera and right-arm off-spinner Sammu Ashan shared 7 wickets as Ananda registered an easy 6-wicket win over Lumbini at Bloomfield grounds.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Lumbini lost their way against the top-quality spinners of Ananda College as they made a paltry 127 and they maintained a poor run-rate of 2.58. Anjana Kaluarachchi top scored with 39 runs for Ananda College. Chasing 128 runs to win, Ananda lost only 4 wickets in their chase as left-handed Sahan Arachchige was the best batsman scoring an unbeaten 39.

Lumbini College – 127 all out in 49.1 overs: Anjana Kaluarchchi 39, Tharushan Iddamalgoda 26, Asel Sigera 4/13, Sammu Ashan 3/29, Nipun Chamika 2/21.

Ananda College – 128/4 in 30.3 overs: Sahan Archchige 39*, Kavishka Anjula 33, Wasana Madushanka 2/24.

Thurstan College will now take on Ananda College on April 2nd at R. Premadasa Stadium for the 2nd semi-final while the 1st semi-final between D.S Senanayake College and Trinity College will be played on Fool’s day at the same venue.
