Three new records on opening day at the Junior Tarbet

The Sir John Tarbet Junior Final Athletic Champion 2017 commenced today (8th of November) at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex – Diyagama. Descending from the oldest school’s athletic tournament, this event organized by the Sri Lanka School Athletic Association is held for the 48th consecutive year. With over 12,000 registrations from 1,500 schools, the event has placed the bar high within the first day itself with three astonishing new meet records.

W. K Heshani Maheshika from St. Sebastian Balika Maha Vidyalaya- Kandana, secured first place with a new meet record in the girls under 15 Discuss Throw event. Her achievement of 35.46m managed to outperform the previous record of 31.57m established in 2014 by Chanuka Atapattu. H. A. V. L.Hapuarachchi from Sumana Balika Vidyalaya – Ratnapura received the silver medal while, S.A.Y. P. Abyekoon received from Galgamuwa Maha Vidyalaya received the Bronze. Further, 11 participants successfully qualified up to the merit standard of 19.20m.

One of the stand out performers of the day was P.A.D. Ruwansa Weerakkodi from Janapathi Balika Vidyalaya – Nawala who struck a new meet record with a performance of 4.88m thrashing a close call for the previous record at 4.83m, after 23 long years. The competition remained strong throughout with outstanding performances by the fellow competitors, K.G. Tharushi Hansika from Vijitha Central College – Dickwella and Selista Gnanasekar from Good Shepherd Girls Maha Vidyalaya – Colombo 13 who secured the second and third places respectively.

With a performance of 12.9 sec S. D. Kahagama brought glory to Sumana Balika Vidyalaya – Ratnapura establishing a new meet record in the Under 14 girls 80m Hurdle semifinals event. The record of 13.6 sec established in 1996 was only tied in the year 2004. Day one concludes a long day with much awaited hope on the young emerging athletes. Watched by their performance in the heats, the competition remains strong raising the standards high each year.
