Three MSD officers to accompany Sri Lanka team in UK

Three Police officers attached to the Ministers’ Security Division (MSD) will tag along with the Sri Lanka team for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 as Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has decided to take additional measures to strengthen the security of the ‘National Team’ in England & Wales.

The island suffered a fatal blow on Easter Sunday when the Terrorists bombed Churches and Hotels on 21st April, resulting in over 250 deaths and 500+ injured personnel.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in a communique on Wednesday stated that they will be working closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Ministry of Sports regarding the safety of the team in the pinnacle tournament in limited-overs cricket, which is set to commence on the 30th of May in England & Wales.

Sports Minister, Harin Fernando has formally got the consent of the Police Department in Sri Lanka to send the three Police officers to the United Kingdom from the newly appointed Inspector General of
Police (IGP).

“SLC requested for additional security, hence we got the necessary approvals from the MSD to send three of their finest officers with the team. They will work closely with the security officers attached to the ICC in the World Cup. Currently, we are in no position to take any risks. “ Minister said at a Press Briefing on Thursday.

Countries like England, Australia and India have their own security personnel when they tour overseas. But Sri Lanka have only relied on the security plans put in place by the host nation when they travel out of the island.

Due to the Easter Sunday bombings, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had to cancel their Motivation Camp in Maduru Oya and Training Camp in Dambulla last week. The national team conducted a couple of practice session at SSC grounds this week under heavy protection of the Gajaba Regiment of Sri Lanka Army.

Talking to the ThePapare.Com last week, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) CEO, Ashley de Silva said, “ICC has a good security plan for the World Cup but we have requested ICC to give more than they promised after the attacks on Easter Sunday. “
