St. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia cruise to the quarter finals

Under 17 Division One Cricket

The boys from Mount Lavinia cruised their way in to the quarters beating Dharmaraja College Kandy by 7 wickets in the pre quarter finals of the ‘Singer U17 Division I’ tournament at St. Thomas’ College Grounds today (21st August).

Dharmaraja College won the toss and elected to bat first under sunny conditions on a good batting track. But things did not go the way Dharmaraja wanted as the home side started off well with a wicket in the very first over of the match. There was a half century stand between Isuru Dayananda and Captain Dulaj Bandara for the 3rd wicket to resurrect the innings somewhat.

Dayananda failed to find momentum as he made a very slow 20 of 88 balls before he was dismissed. Bandara went on to score 46 runs which was the only big contribution from the top order in the game. When he looked set for a big score, he was unfortunately run out to put Dharmaraja at 104 for 5 in the 38th over.

The lower middle order struggled against the bowling of Shamilka Wickramathilake who ran through the tail and bundled out Dharmaraja for a solitary 148 in the last over of the innings. Wickramathilake ended up with figures of 4 for 26, while Kishan Munasinghe and Umayanga Suwaris got 2 wickets each.

The response from the Thomians was clinical. They didn’t waste any time whatsoever in chasing down the target. They lost Captain De Mel early, but Rathnayaka made a quick fire 24 to provide the start they needed. Deon Fernando and Ravindu De Silva who made 36, put up an excellent 3rd wicket half century partnership to take them closer to the target. Deon Fernando remained unbeaten on 51 and Munasinghe on 22 not out to see off the run chase and seal an easy victory by 7 wickets with more than 13 over’s to spare.

Result: St. Thomas’ College beat Dharmaraja College by 7 wickets.
