The much-anticipated 11th “Battle of Centralianz,” famously dubbed the “Golden Battle,” concluded recently at the BOI Ground in Katunayake. The clash, a historic encounter between two prominent educational institutions established by the Father of Free Education, Hon. C.W.W. Kannangara, saw Dudley Senanayake Central College, Tholangamuwa, deliver a dominant performance to defeat Galahitiyawa Central College, Ganemulla, by a massive innings and 132 runs.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Dudley Senanayake Central College faced early pressure. Openers Navindu Himantha and Yugeeth Methmitha Kurudugahapitiya stepped out with intent, but the Galahitiyawa bowlers struck early blows, reducing them to a precarious 45/4. However, a recovery effort was led by Gagana Diwan Kethmira and Sunera Surathuru, who steadied the innings with a vital 39-run partnership. Gagana was unfortunate to miss out on a half-century, but his contribution laid the foundation for a turnaround. With the score at 114/6, the match-winning partnership blossomed between Anjana Yasas and Isuru Bandara.

The duo put on a century stand that completely shifted the momentum. Anjana Yasas played a masterful innings, striking three sixes and a couple of boundaries on his way to a top score of 88. Isuru Bandara provided excellent support, reaching his half-century before departing. Dudley Senanayake Central College was eventually bundled out for 250. For Galahitiyawa, Pasan Wenusara and Janith Denuwan were the pick of the bowlers, claiming four and three wickets respectively.

In reply, Galahitiyawa Central College never found their rhythm. From start to finish, the batsmen struggled to build meaningful contributions. The lone resistance came from left-handed opener Rameesha Nikil, who displayed immense grit, occupying the crease for 171 balls. Despite his effort, he managed only 36 runs, which stood as the top score of the innings. Dilush Ranuga also showed resilience, scoring 13 off 54 balls. The pair produced the best partnership of the innings, adding 34 runs for the fourth wicket, but the rest of the batting line-up collapsed. Isuru Bandara shone with the ball for Tholangamuwa, picking up four wickets as Galahitiyawa was bowled out for just 81.

With a first-innings deficit of 169 runs, Galahitiyawa was asked to follow on. What followed was a ruthless display of bowling by the Tholangamuwa side. They tore through the Galahitiyawa line-up, dismissing all ten wickets in just 21.1 overs. The batting unit crumbled for a mere 37 runs, with only Dilush Ranuga reaching double figures (12). Navindu Himantha delivered a dazzling performance with the ball, dismantling the opposition by claiming six wickets.

The encounter ended with all the honours going to Dudley Senanayake Central College, Tholangamuwa, who celebrated a thumping victory by an innings and 132 runs, retaining their supremacy in the “Battle of Centralianz.”
