Thishara and Kalum set up strong foundation for Richmond

Richmond College Galle took on S. D. S Jayasinghe Dehiwela in an interschool cricket match played at the Galle international stadium today.

 

Richmond College winning the toss decided to field first and S. D. S Jayasinghe in their first innings could only muster up 150 runs with Supun Jayasanka and Hashan Hewawasam making useful contributions of 38 and 32 runs respectively. 

Jayasinghe’s bowling was led by Varuna Deshapriya who bagged four crucial wickets for 35 runs. However the highlight of the day came when the host’s came in to bat in their first innings. Openers Thishara Gimhan and Kalum Nanayakkara gave their team a firm foundation going in to day two scoring 136 runs for the first wicket in 27 over’s which gave the needed impetus to the innings. Wicket keeper batsman Gimhan was the star of the show scoring an unbeaten 97* runs off 103 balls while his partner ended his innings on 60 runs. Gimhans innings was inclusive of ten fours and two sixes. He was joined by A. K Tyrone who was unbeaten on 19* at the end of days play.

St. Aloysius spin wizard Madushanka shines on day one 

Nalanda College took on St. Aloysius College today in an inter school cricket encounter played at the Nalanda College grounds today. 

The host’s batting first could not breakaway on home soil ending day one on 152 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Avishka de Silva from Nalanda was the only player to shine, as he remained unbeaten on 51* at the close of play. Malinga Amarasinghe and Senura Amarasinghe were the other noteworthy performers scoring 23 and 22 runs respectively. 

For the visitors left arm leg spinner Ashan Madushanka tore through the Nalanda College batting line up claiming 5 for 40. It was a grand bowling effort from the Galle spinner as he kept to his lines bowling a tight angle.
