Team Sri Lanka takes wing to Rio

    The Island’s contingent for the 31st summer Olympiad left the Island early last evening. A sendoff ceremony was organized at the National Olympic house where athletes attended religious rites.

    Veteran Marathoner Indrajith Cooray, who will be representing the country at his 03rd Olympic Games, having competed in Athens 2004 and London 2012, will be the flag bearer at this year’s edition.

    The National flag was handed over to the team by the National Olympic committee officials and the Secretary of the Sports ministry.

    Sri Lanka will have 09 athletes representing the country at the games. 07 Athletes and officials took wing yesterday with Swimmer Mathew Abeysinghe and Marksman Mangala Samarakoon having already left to Rio for early preparations.
